Trompe l’Oeil Scroll Crystal Rainbow

A Crystal Rainbow for Ciarnat, based on the pages for the Office of the Dead in a distinctive late 15th c.  French Book of Hours.

Modern and period gouache and ink on pergamenta.

The source manuscript uses a conceit of trompe l’oeil scrolls resting on backgrounds ranging from faux marble, to woven patterns, skulls, or plain parchment. The pages opening the Office of the Dead are unique in that the content is reflected in the background.

Knowing the recipient’s taste, I choose the skulls.

This manuscript uses the color of the parchment as a contrast with the  white edges of the scrolls, and to create the shading on the skulls and crossbones. I have attempted to reproduce this with the off white pergamenta.

The pieced border is drawn directly form the main exemplar,  and the initial from the previous page in the manuscript.

The original is 6 3/4″ by 4 1/3″.
