Mountain’s Pride for Ulaan

A Mountain’s Pride for an outgoing archery champion with a Mongolian persona.

Gouache on Bristol, 12″x 9″.

The concept is a Paiza, a safe conduct or proof of authority from the Khan. The actual artifacts were metal, either cast or engraved.

A 13th c example:

The text is transliterated into the short lived 13th-14th c Phags-Pa script, and reads:

Know all that having served as our champion of the bow, Ulaan is now entered into the order of the Mountains Pride.
